Vacancy and Humidity Sensors
The laundry room and master toilet have a 2-gang configuration with single pole switches.
They control the overhead light and exhaust fan.
We kept leaving these on for long periods of time, so the main objective was to automate shut off.
Setting up!
I’m just a fraudulent electrician, not a real one, so I went through a bunch of experimenting to find stuff out. Like tagging the wrong wire as the hot wire. Turns out all the hot wires were wired together with the wire nut and the load wires were direct from wall to fixture. I thought it was the opposite!
Wire cutters are not my preference for straightening wires. I’m learning that I prefer needle nose pliers 🤷♂️
Closeup of the wiring.
Removing pushed in wires and almost breaking my lens screw driver
Spreading wires is generally good practice when changing multiple fixtures at once to not get confused
This is where my fraudulence goes on full display. I thought I could get away with wiring some of the neutral wires directly into the fixtures, but that didn’t work at all after trying most of them. I have a lot to learn about house wiring still! Also it was painful separating the neutral wires from each other due to the stiffness.
This “experiment” added an hour to my time because of going back and forth to the breaker to test.
Time for some jumper wires. Had to get out the 14/3 Romex and cut out the white wires. Kind of a waste of the other wiring, but I really want a consistent jacket color.
Turned the breaker back on and…success!
This is one of the hardest parts that I love to complain about…aligning switches on the wall. So chonky.
Did some setting adjustment and cleanup
Put the fancy new Lutron wallplate on…and kind of a big gap behind the fan switch 😕
I basically had to redo the alignment on the fan switch to close the gap a bit more
Good enough!
Replicated this setup in the master bathroom
